Create Your Dream Sewing Sanctuary: Tips and Essentials for a Happy Sewing Space

As a sewist, I spend many hours a day in my sewing room and over the years I have found myself creating, experimenting, and bringing many projects to life (a minute of silence for all the failed projects and the tears shed over them ).

But what makes a sewing room truly special? For me its a fine balance of creativity and practicality. Its a room that needs to hold it all together, yet its going to get messy, like all the time !

In this post, I'll delve into the key elements of a good sewing room, exploring the essential tips, tools, and accessories that'll help you create a space that sparks joy, inspires creativity, and makes sewing a breeze.

Organization: The Backbone of a Happy Sewing Space

A well-organized sewing room is the foundation of a productive and enjoyable sewing experience. When your fabrics, threads, and notions are neatly stored and easily accessible, you'll spend less time searching for what you need and more time creating.

Here are some organization tips to get you started:

  • Use storage bins and baskets to keep your fabrics, threads, and notions organized and out of sight. I have my large chunk of fabrics stored away inside my cupboards but I have baskets holding my WIP, to be cut, already cut & to be sewn piles separately, these help them stay accessible while sorted. I make baskets of all sizes for this. I also make use of all the tins, sturdy cardboard boxes etc to hold smaller notions in place.

Our Large Storage Baskets are perfect for storing bulky items like fabrics, batting, and pillows. Made from sturdy cotton n canvas, these baskets are durable, machine washable, and feature a stylish design that complements any sewing room décor.

  •  Invest in a sewing table to store your machine, daily tools and supplies. The table I use is a wooden table I got on Olx at just Rs.700. I later did a block print decoupage on it just to pretty it up a bit. What I really like about the table is that apart from the drawers; it has a laminate top which keeps cleaning so easy.

- Utilize wall space by installing shelves, hooks, or a pegboard to hang your tools and accessories- this is something I have not been able to do – renters troubles.

Good Lighting

... is essential for any sewing room. Proper lighting can help reduce eye strain, improve visibility, and enhance your overall sewing experience.

- Natural light: Position your sewing table or machine near a window to take advantage of natural light.

- Task lighting: Make sure you install lights of good wattage in your sewing space to reduce strain on eyes.

Comfortable Seating: Saves your back

A comfortable and supportive chair is vital for any sewing room. And when you are sewing for a whole day , its good to mix up tasks like cutting, sewing trimming so you change up positions.

Sewing Room Essentials: Must-Have Tools and Accessories

Every sewing room needs a few essential tools and accessories to make sewing easier, more efficient, and enjoyable. Here are some must-haves to consider:

  • Scissors, threads, pins, and needles: Invest in good quality scissors and threads, pins, and machine needles to ensure smooth, trouble-free sewing. Your neighbourhood fancy store will have most of the basic notions or Amazon is a great place to get regular supplies.

Design Inspiration: Adding Personality and Style to Your Sewing Room

Your sewing room will reflect your personality and style. By adding decorative elements, inspirational quotes, and personal touches, you'll create a space that motivates and inspires you to create – I have a wall of fabric hoops made from a left overs of a  product collection from when my business started, it’s a lovely memory of how it all started off. That was a quick and simple DIY which cost me less than Rs,500.00

I also have some memorabilia, some pretty crafts from other makers to pretty up my space.

Here are some inspirational ideas you can try:

- Display your favorite fabrics, quilts, or sewing projects on a wall or shelf.

- Add some greenery, like plants or a vase with fresh flowers, to bring life and color to your space.

- Create a vision board or inspiration wall with quotes, images, and fabrics that motivate and inspire you.

Check out my board on Pinterest for a lot more ideas for sewing room decorating, I will be adding more on the go.

By incorporating these essentials into your sewing room, you'll be well-equipped to tackle any sewing project that comes your way.

Creating your dream sewing space is all about finding the perfect balance of form, function, and personality. By incorporating these tips, essentials, and accessories into your sewing room, you'll be well on your way to creating a space that sparks joy, inspires creativity.

Happy sewing,
